| Abstract: | Among the bio-derived fuels, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is considered as an ideal alternative to gasoline because of its excellent energy density and high octane number. Feather-derived layered porous carbon by activation with KOH (AFC) was used as catalyst support, and supported palladium nanoparticles were used as catalysts for the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to DMF. The Pd/AFC-3 catalysts achieved a 99% conversion of HMF and a 95% yield of DMF using formic acid as a hydrogen donor due to their relatively large specific surface areas and suitable pore structure. In addition, HMF was effectively adsorbed on the surface of AFC through the hydroxy group to form strong O-H···N or O-H···π interactions, which will be expected to accelerate the hydrogenolysis of HMF. Formic acid not only serves as an H source for the hydrogenation of aldehyde groups but also undergoes esterification with the hydroxy group to form formyloxy ester, which in turn forms DMF after deoxygenation. The catalytic activity of the catalyst is excellent to such an extent that it is even comparative to those catalysts prepared from commercial carriers, and it can be maintained for multiple catalytic cycles. |
